Who we are

The art collective Black Iris, founded in 2022 by Mattias and Anna Camner, functions like a fully dilated pupil, welcoming the maximum influx of light, diversity, and transcendence.

Our mission is to stretch the boundaries of contemporary art, nurture artistic growth, and foster a more inclusive artistic ecosystem.

About Black Iris

Black Iris creates exhibitions in unexpected locations that are typically closed to the public. The bond that unites this alliance of artists is more than just a shared platform; it is a desire to push the boundaries of art and a belief that together as a group, they can reach further than as individual artists.

Black Iris strives to break down barriers and create accessible spaces where artists can engage with their viewers directly. Through its initiatives, the platform embraces collaboration, and diversity in artistic dialogue, and encourages artists to push the boundaries of the ever-evolving nature of artistic expression.

— Black Iris

The idea of a “black iris” symbolizes the notion that the eye, or the mind’s eye, has the capacity to perceive an infinite amount of information and beauty from the world. Just as the pupil of the eye dilates in response to darkness, the black iris represents the idea that in the darkest and most mysterious corners of existence, there are unexplored areas of knowledge and understanding waiting to be discovered.

By positioning itself as an ideational and non-profit complement to traditional galleries, Black Iris acknowledges the need for new avenues that can showcase and support contemporary artists. It recognizes that the art world is not limited to the confines of physical gallery spaces but extends to virtual platforms and pop-up venues where artists can engage with their audiences in innovative ways.
