About

Maria Nordin explores our view of the world and of ourselves as bodily beings. Her work revolves around how experiences are expressed through the human body, or how bodily experiences can be visualized.

Thematically, the paintings have dealt with the adaptability and elasticity of the body, the power of the gaze, the psychological dimension of the skin and recently the fall associated with decay. The large-scale watercolour paintings, depicting people, oscillate between the beautiful and the unpleasant, between vulnerability and power. With the large format she aims to create a physical experience for the viewer.

Maria Nordin was educated at the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm, Sweden (2005– 2010). She has exhibited regularly at galleries and museums in Sweden and has received high recognition for her work with large scale watercolours.

In 2011 she was awarded the Beckers Art Award and a solo show at Färgfabriken in Stockholm, Sweden and in 2017 she received Carl-Axel Valén’s Sholarship. Nordin is represented in the collections of, among others, Moderna Museet, Stockholm, The Nordic Watercolour Museum, Västerås Konstmuseum and Gothenburg Museum of Art in Sweden.
