About

Ulrika Sparres’ work investigate the mechanisms, behaviors and social pattern that constitute our lives. Her practice explores subjects like individuality and the impact of the development towards individualism and consumerism in contemporary society.

She creates spaces through text, sculpture, installation, performance, photography and sound where she examines how non-religious and scientific beliefs are expressed in the secularized western society of today.

The starting point for Sparres most recent project Ear to the Ground is a search for the spiritual and the physical in nature, and how these relationships are created and transformed. Through Ear to the Ground she wants to investigate how our relationship with what we consider nature can be reevaluated by giving it a voice and a possible language. The project was presented at Index Foundation in 2020 together with the publication Ear to the Ground released by Art & Theory Publishing.

Her work has been exhibited at Färgfabriken, Reykjavik Art Museum, Sven-Harrys Konstmuseum, Stene Projects, Expo Chicago, Dome of Visions and Index Foundation. Additionally, she has performed a number of projects in public spaces. In 2008 she was the recipients of the Beckers Art Award and the Stockholm Cultural Award in 2012.
